The venerable cask-matured Malmsey possesses the superb full honeyed style of this classic Madeira variety. Its robust character has been tempered by the prolonged ageing in oak casks. Serve with dessert or enjoy on its own.
Another one of our consistently best selling wines on madeira-shopping.com. This excellent wine deserves to adorn any respectable Madeira wine shelf by the dozens of bottles.
The colour has the look of a bright, freshly poured, dark earl grey tea. The bouquet has a somewhat balsamic with molasses mix to hints of iodine and honey. I understand why Jancis Robinson called it “almost medicinal” on the nose upon her tasting in May 2010. I put that down to the wine having being tasted soon after the opening of the bottle, perhaps. However, the bouquet wafts to a caramel and chocolate honey when left a while to breathe.
On the palate it jolts initially with its golden syrup and lemongrass sweet twang evolving into that broad space of balsamic reduction with notes of fresh to green citrus, mature sultana raisins, spices and voluminous acidity.
The finish has the astringency of pomegranate juice and lasts for some minutes.
- Tasting note by Jorge Barbosa (2010)
Blandy's 15 year old Rich Malmsey underwent fermentation off the skins with natural yeast at temperatures between 18°C - 21°C in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. After approximately 48 hours, fortification with grape brandy takes place, arresting fermentation at the desired degree of sweetness.
Blandy’s 15 Year Old Malmsey was aged for 15 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks of this wine are gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. During this totally natural ageing, the wine underwent regular racking before finally being bottled.
SERVING & CELLARAGE
Blandy's 15 year old Malmsey is fined and does not require decanting. It is a superb accompaniment to dessert dishes, especially fruit, cakes, rich chocolate puddings and cheeses. It has been bottled when ready for drinking and will keep for several months after opening.
